SYSC programs:
Through these programs and services, youth become responsible, contributing members of society and have the knowledge and skills necessary to become self-sufficient. Women are empowered to be able to provide for their families and address their common problems. We increase local, national and global awareness of children's issues. Outreach services: SYSC provides Outreach Services throughout the Municipality of Nyeri. Our goal is to contact children, young people on the street, orphans, build a relationship and work together to find opportunities that lead to a better life. Drop-in Centre
The Drop-in Centre is a place where youth can find somebody to talk to, recreation, a safe space, to have a free meal and shower, first aid, counselling and some clothing when available. The centre serves approximately 20 youth every day. The drop-in centre also offers a meeting space for community youth for interaction and development activities. SYSC Community Based Scouting:
SYSC Community Based Scouting Troop is a youth leadership program that works in
collaboration between Kenya Scouts Association. The scouting program provides community
services like, tree planning, environment protection, community clean up, HIV/AIDS education
and mentoring children.
Intervention to prevent the transmission of new HIV infections has been the major focus of SYSC programs. HIV/AIDS is a main component all our other programs. The main objectives of this intervention are to build awareness, to promote changes in behaviour, reduce stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS, provide home cares for people living with AIDS and provide support to orphans. Vocational training We believe that, feeding the youth today is not enough; we want to equip them with skills that will enable them to feed themselves and others tomorrow. Vocational training is a key strategy to this end. The vocation skills training program is designed to provide skills that will create opportunities for employment or self employment for the focus group. Currently, SYSC program offers computer course, competency in computer skills is essential in today's job market, we also offer, hair dressing, dress making, welding and masonry. SYSC incorporates computer skill training in all programs in order to increase employment opportunities for youth. Plans are in progress to establish a full vocation training school that will offer certificate and diploma level industrial courses. We are looking for looking for partnership for this project, if you would like to support or know more about the project, please contact us at: shauriyakoyouth@yahoo.com Sports
Other SYSC innovative programs include a youth soccer club. Both boys and girls participate in sports activities. Weekly sports training and football events are part of activities. The SYSC United football Club was registered in 2004 and has boys and girls teams. The soccer clubs is very active, popular in town and helps to keep our youth engaged. Child Sponsorship A steady increase in the number of children and orphans that need our support and education sponsorship requires substantial and constant financial resources, which at moment we do not have in our budget. Please consider sponsoring our children. The cost of sponsoring a child is $ 22 per month. This money is used for: school uniform and materials, food, clothing, medical services, and housing. Automatic monthly deposit can be arranged. For more information on our sponsorship program, please contact Anthony Mucheru at: shauriyakoyouth@yahoo.com Please make sponsorship donation in international money order payable to: Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre or contact us for bank to bank transfer details. Other Programs Urban farming - SYSC has three one acre vegetable gardens, where we grow corn, potatoes, beans and cabbage. The produce from the gardens is used to supplement the drop-in centre's food supply and the rest goes to Family Food Sharing. Through the gardening project, we train youth in composting and gardening skills. Shauri Yako Tushuriane Women Self-help Group - Shauri Yako Women Self-help Group was formed by and works under the umbrella of SYSC. The organization attempts to address increasing numbers of poor single mothers who care for children. STWSG support its member through, social support, food sharing, vegetable gardening and income generating projects. The group is provided with leadership and job skills training by SYSC so that they are able to address their common problems. Shauri Yako newsletter - the SYSC newsletter is produced quarterly. It's a tool for promoting awareness of issues affecting our youth and community, sharing information about the development and highlighting local youth related activities. The newsletter is geared towards the community, supporters, Friends of Shauri Yako and those in the public less likely to have access to timely information regarding SYSC work. Most importantly, the newsletter also promotes awareness of HIV/AIDS. In addition, the letter also encourages a greater sense of community, encouraging residents to get involved in community development, build cohesiveness among the groups and individuals associated with SYSC.
