About SYSC

Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre (SYSC) is a community-based organization located in Nyeri, Kenya. Founded in 1996, SYSC is registered with the Kenyan government's Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services. SYSC is committed to youth and community development as a means to alleviate poverty of marginalized people through the supportive programs.

The SYSC program purpose is to support and to create development opportunities for underprivileged residents of the Nyeri Municipality, with a focus on vulnerable youth and women who take care of children. SYSC works at the grass root level and provides the following programs: outreach, support, skills training, school enrolment, HIV/AIDS voluntary counselling and testing, home care, youth mentoring, counselling, drop-in, sports and community services.

SYSC work is inline with the Millennium Development Goals set out by the United Nations and acts in support of the global campaign to Make Poverty History. SYSC believes that progress towards poverty alleviation will take place only if these recommendations will be fully implemented and partnerships developed for committed action. The aim is to reduce youth poverty, HIV/AIDS and create social and economic development opportunities for youth and women who care for the children, helping them to become self-sufficient and able to contribute to their community. We do this by providing children, youth and women with development programs and outreach services.

At SYSC, we:

  • We reach out to vulnerable youth and women
  • We show them, that we care and build their trust
  • We support them and help them learn skills
  • We teach them how to make good choices
  • We create hope for them
  • We support and empower poor single mothers who have no means to provide for their children
